41st CHELTENHAM OPEN AIR ART EXHIBITION, 1st-18th July The Cheltenham Open Air Art exhibition is a colourful attraction in the town and has been running each year since 1969. It showcases the art of over 100 local painters over a 4 week period. CHELTENHAM

THE BOOK CLUB 1st-29th July The Nanchboy Decade 1999-2009. An exhibition that presents the life and times of a pioneering British creative whose witty, pop-inspired paintings caught the zeitgeist and whose influence can still be seen today. EC2A 4RH. LONDON
COMPTON VERNEY 24th until 31st October Volcano: From Turner to Warhol. Eye-opening and spectacular, this exhibition traces a route through the sequence of volcanic eruptions - from the calm volcano and first ominous rumblings, to cataclysmic explosion, through panic and death to aftermath, and then quietly back to dormancy and extinction – through the work of well-known artists such as Turner, Warhol, Joseph Wright of Derby, Volaire and many more. SOUTHAMPTON CITY ART GALLERY 23rd until 26th September National Portrait Gallery-Writers of Influence: Shakespeare to J.K. Rowling. This special exhibition will take visitors on a journey through literature history. Over 60 works from the National Portrait Gallery including Jane Austen to Jarvis Cocker have been loaned to Southampton City Art Gallery for this exhibition. In a landmark event, Writers of Influence: Shakespeare to JK Rowling will include the Gallery’s inaugural UK loan of its iconic Chandos portrait of William Shakespeare, the very first work it acquired in 1856. The painting will go on display alongside a host of significant literary portraits from the NPG’s collections, including work by Vanessa Bell, Bill Brandt, Henri Cartier Bresson, Man Ray and Lord Snowdon. MALLS GALLERY 1st-10 July. Main and North Gallery The Society of Women Artists Summer Exhibition. MALLS GALLERY 1st-10 July. East Gallery The East Anglian Group of Marine Artists. The Group concentrates on depicting the East Coast maritime scene in a variety of styles ranging from traditional to modern. Amongst the 120 works on display visitors are bound to find something to suit their taste and pocket. This is the eighth year of the National Students’ Art Exhibition held under the patronage of the Royal Society of British Artists. MALLS GALLERY 20th-25th July. Main and East Galleries Guild of Aviation Artists. Once again, award-winning art is on display at the world’s biggest aviation art exhibition. With a complete range of media including ceramics, all the art works are original pieces by UK and International artists, professional and talented amateurs. Complementing every conceivable aircraft or aviation subject are fine examples of land, sea and skyscapes. Subjects range from early flights through the World Wars to the latest civil and military aviation subjects. Thursday until 8pm, closes 3pm on final day. LONDON
MALLS GALLERY 20th-24th July. North Gallery Hesketh Hubbard. Your chance to view and buy life and figure studies from London’s largest life drawing society, based here at the Mall Galleries. The 76th exhibition will display a diverse and exciting range of the best new works by members of the Society. Exhibits include paintings, drawings, original prints and sculptures. ZEST CONTEMPORARY GLASS GALLERY 22nd July until 4th September NATURAL SELECTION. A major solo exhibition of work by glass artist Tolly Nason. THE PLEASANCE THEATRE 1st July until 5th September New Etchings by Flora Bradwell. In this series of Circus inspired etchings Flora Bradwell populates an imagined circus with her ideal cast. SOUTHAMPTON CITY ART GALLERY 1st July until 5th September Sea Fever. From Turner to today. Southampton City Art Gallery presents a major exhibition for summer 2010 of over 80 works by some of Britain’s best known artists. It will draw on highlights from the gallery’s permanent collection including Turner’s recently conserved Fisherman upon a Lee Shore in Squally Weather and Christopher Nevinson’s Loading Timber at Southampton Docks, including Barbara Hepworth’s Sea Form (Porthmeor), Maggi Hambling’s recent painting, Erosion and Julian Opie’s We swam in the Sea. THE ORIGINAL GALLERY 15th July until 7th August Hoffmann Foundation for Autism International Exhibition. People affected by Autism and its co-morbid conditions, were invited to submit a work of art which was then curated into an exhibition.Private view on Wednesday 21st July at 7pm, selected works of art will be awarded the Hoffmann Foundation for Autism Prize for Drawing and Painting. MAP CAFÉ 26th July until 6th September Natalie Wentworth. Moment 'It All happened in a moment' Photographic Exhibition. Kentish Town’s Map Café launches its first exhibition of 2010 with one of London’s most exciting new photographers, entitled “Moment” the collection explores the power of a moment – a split second in time, that can tell a story, challenge thoughts and ignite imagination. Throughout August and September, Dominic Bradnum exhibits his paintings of neon lights within the chic and retro stylings of Blanch House. Dominic Bradnum’s paintings are emblazoned with lit-up slogans and abstract neon forms in vivid, saturated colours. SOUTHAMPTON CITY ART GALLERY 17th until 5th December Bridget Riley: Flashback Arts Council Touring Exhibition. Bridget Riley is one of Britain’s best-known artists. Her paintings are a language of colours and abstract shapes, developed into patterns, formations and relationships between colours, providing strong and extraordinary visual experiences. The exhibition will consist of 30 paintings and works on paper. We are delighted to announce Bridget Riley will curate a room from Southampton City Arts Gallery’s permanent collection to coincide with this exhibition. SOUTHAMPTON
